One of the very first cartoons made at Soyuzdetmultfilm studio (later renamed Soyuzmultfilm). Directed by Olga Khodatayeva in 1936, it shares themes with some of her other films, such as the 1928 “Samoyed Boy” and the 1944 “Stolen Sun” (both can be found on Youtube). Unusually for cartoons made at the studio at this time, it doesn’t attempt to imitate Disney wholesale, but seems to carry on the Soviet animation traditions from before the founding of the new central studio and the switch to cel animation. This is seen for example, in the wide selection of shading contours – such as white outlines.

This is a Russian cartoon from 2004, based on Maxim Gorky’s poem “Song of the Stormy Petrel”. The satirical Stormy Petrel is by Alexei Turkus, and was produced by the Russian animation studio Argus International. English subtitles.

The Song of the Stormy Petrel is a short piece of revolutionary literature from 1901. The poem was later referred to as “the battle anthem of the revolution”.

Pity enough, the image quality of the video is not the best (but not the worst either) – and we should also mention that this is a cartoon also adults can enjoy.
