Fifty years ago mankind could hardly imagine we would one day be able to stare down at our planet from above. But on April 12th 1961 Yuri Gagarin was propelled not only to the stars, but also to global fame when he became the first man in space. Tessa Arcillia visited the place where history was made.
Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human to journey into outer space with his Vostok spacecraft. He died 1968 in a MiG-15UTI crash near the town of Kirzhach – just 34 years old. The bodies of Gagarin and flight instructor Seryogin were cremated and buried in the walls of the Kremlin.
