In 1547, Ivan IV archduke of Moscow, crowns himself Tsar of Russia. He’s intent on reclaiming lost Russian territory. The film follows his coronation, his wedding, his campaign against the Tartars in Kazan, his illness and recovery, his campaigns in the Baltic and Crimea, self-imposed exile in Alexandrov. All the while, his many enemies threaten his success.
Ivan the Terrible is a historical epic film (in two independent parts) about Ivan IV of Russia made by Russian director Sergei Eisenstein. Part 1 was released in 1944 but Part 2 was not released until 1958 due to political censorship.
